This book tells the extraordinary story of how we’ve come to understand owls, their biology, brains, and behavior, and explores many of the surprising new scientific discoveries: how owls talk to one another, how they ‘see’ sound, how they court their mates in wild and outlandish ways and fiercely protect their nests, how they migrate huge distances and survive the radically changing conditions of our planet. An exciting exploration of the new science of owls and an investigation into why these remarkable and mysterious birds exert such a hold on the human imagination. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Seriously Wicked by Tina ConnollyIn essence, this book had a good premise but it was altogether too short for my liking. I liked the background for the dragon but I wanted more of this. There are some interesting background characters but I felt they didn’t really get a lot of development. I did like the idea of the story that Camellia is trying to stop her mother from taking over the world, while also attempting to get a demon out of the boy she is currently crushing on. This book just happens to also have some magical elements which mean that the out-of-control elements really and truly are out-of-control. The girl is trying her best not to look too stupid in front of the boy but it all just gets more and more out of control along the way. All in all, things are not turning out well for Camellia, not well at all.Īt its very core, this is a very basic story about a girl and the new boy in school. Camellia is also tasked with all the regular household chores such as feeding and cleaning out both the dragon and the werewolf along with gathering any ingredients her mother requires. Camellia has absolutely no talent for magic and wants nothing to do with this evil master plan but her mother keeps making bits of her fall to sleep or turn into noodles if she fails to help. Her witch adoptive mother is trying to teach her the magical arts while also attempting to take over the world using a hard to control demon that just happens to have taken over the new boy at school’s body. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Sweet rome tillie coleSweet Home was faced paced, but when it slowed down, it was to enjoy the slow and romantic parts of Rome and Molly’s relationship. It just so happened that Rome and Molly had the makings of their own Romeo and Juliet story: a conniving ex-girlfriend, horrid parents, a lot of insecurities and more. While there were a lot of similarities and plot consistencies to the original Romeo and Juliet, Rome and Molly had their own story to tell. The best part of Sweet Home, I think, was how Cole owned her own version of Romeo and Juliet. But are they destined to live the fate of their namesakes? And with their whirlwind courting comes a true love. I was instantly invested in Molly’s (last name Shakespeare) story from the prologue, but once we meet Rome–short for Romeo– phew, that just notched the story up high in my eyes!īut when they meet something magical happens, they find a kindred soul. Next time you decide to go on a break, Kate and John, head further afield. MY THOUGHTS: Definitely a short story, but a very satisfying one. Swept up in the girl’s story, and a need for justice, Kate and John begin looking into the mysterious disappearance of Angela Blaine. After closing a difficult case, they’re looking forward to some down time, but their relaxation is cut short by rumors that the old house where they’re staying is haunted by a girl who disappeared twenty years earlier, leaving nothing behind but some bloody clothes by the river and rumors of a volatile relationship. 'Everyone likes a good ghost story.'ĪBOUT THIS BOOK: It’s autumn in Painters Mill, and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti are taking a much-needed vacation at a small bed and breakfast an hour outside of town. Tomasetti picks up the pen and begins filling out the registration form. 'You mean the ghost?' I ask, trying not to feel foolish. 'The couple who were here last weekend saw her in the orchard,' Harley says.
