Is that based on personal experience? “I was arrested three times – first in 1969, then twice in 1974, each time for no reason. In Hippie, Paulo is arrested and imprisoned. I wanted to write about the things we’ve lost, to show that once the world was free.” Arrested for no reason Why did he decide to look back now? “In the early 70s, we thought the good times had come to stay, but today the world is going backwards and people are polarised. “But I was just telling my story, so it was easier than The Alchemist.” How long did he take to write Hippie? “Four weeks,” he says of his 20th book. Today, I have much more money, but my values are the same’Ĭoelho published three novels before the one that made his name, The Alchemist (1988), which has sold 85 million copies.
